BAföG-Bescheid — your student funding decision

The Amt für Ausbildungsförderung (often via your Studierendenwerk) decided on BAföG. The Bescheid splits grant (Zuschuss) from loan (Darlehen), sets your monthly amounts, and defines when repayment starts after your studies.

What is a BAföG-Bescheid?

A BAföG-Bescheid is the official decision on your application for BAföG (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz — federal training assistance). It is legally binding: it tells you whether funding is approved, how much you receive each month, and how much is a non-repayable grant versus a repayable loan.

BAföG supports students and trainees in eligible school and university programmes. It is not the same as Bürgergeld, Wohngeld, or a bank student loan.

Who sends it — Amt für Ausbildungsförderung

Applications are processed by the Amt für Ausbildungsförderung (AfA), usually part of your local Studierendenwerk or regional BAföG office. The letterhead names this authority and your file number (Förderungsnummer).

Keep the delivery date. You have one month to file a Widerspruch if parent income, rent, or need calculation looks wrong.

Zuschuss vs Darlehen

Approved BAföG is split into two parts:

Above a monthly threshold, funding is typically half grant and half loan. Below that threshold, more may be pure grant. The Bescheid shows separate lines for monatlicher Zuschuss and monatliches Darlehen.

How need (Bedarf) is calculated

The office calculates your Bedarf (need) from standard rates plus your situation:

Annex pages show the arithmetic. If parents' income was estimated too high, a Widerspruch with tax documents can change the outcome.

How to read your BAföG Bescheid

Types of decision

Renewal and follow-up applications

BAföG is usually granted per semester or year. You must file a Folgeantrag (renewal) before the new period and submit updated enrolment and rent proof. Late renewal can create payment gaps — apply early.

If the office processes slowly, you may claim Vorausleistung (advance payment) under strict conditions after a waiting period.

Loan repayment after graduation

The Darlehen part accumulates during study. Repayment generally starts several years after the maximum funding period ends, in instalments, with a total cap (statutory maximum repayable amount). Small monthly repayments are common. The Bescheid or a later notice from the Federal Office of Administration (Bundesverwaltungsamt) explains terms.

Grants (Zuschuss) are not repaid unless the Bescheid is later reversed due to false information.

Reporting changes

You must notify the AfA immediately if:

Failure to report can trigger Erstattung (repayment) of wrongly paid months.

Filing a Widerspruch

Send a written Widerspruch within one month of the Bescheid date to the office on the letter. Cite your Förderungsnummer, explain the error (parent income, rent not counted, wrong semester), and attach proofs (tax assessment, lease, enrolment certificate).

What to do — step by step

Step 1: Note delivery date and Bewilligungszeitraum.

Step 2: Check monthly total and Zuschuss/Darlehen split.

Step 3: Compare parent income deduction to actual tax documents if used.

Step 4: Submit any outstanding Nachweise listed in the Bescheid.

Step 5: Calendar Folgeantrag deadline for next semester.

Step 6: File Widerspruch within one month if figures are wrong.

When to get help

Student unions (AStA) and social counselling at the Studierendenwerk often help with BAföG appeals.
