What is a Bürgergeld-Bescheid?
A Bürgergeld-Bescheid is the Jobcenter's official decision on your claim for Bürgergeld under Book II of the Social Code (SGB II). It is legally binding: it states what you receive, from which date, and on what legal basis — or why a claim was denied.
Bürgergeld covers everyday living costs and reasonable housing for people who cannot support themselves (and their household) from income or assets. It is not the same as Wohngeld (housing benefit from the municipality) or Arbeitslosengeld I (unemployment insurance from the Agentur für Arbeit).
Who sends it — the Jobcenter
Letters come from your local Jobcenter (often labelled Agentur für Arbeit – Jobcenter or a municipal provider). The header should show your BG-Nummer (benefit community number) or customer number and an Aktenzeichen (case reference).
Keep the envelope postmark or delivery date. Appeal deadlines usually run from when the Bescheid was delivered, not when you opened it.
Types of decision
- Bewilligungsbescheid — approval with benefit amounts and period
- Ablehnungsbescheid — full or partial denial with reasons
- Änderungsbescheid — amount changed (income update, new household member, etc.)
- Sanktionsbescheid — benefit cut for failing cooperation duties
- Aufhebungsbescheid — benefits end from a stated date
- Erstattungs- / Nachforderungsbescheid — you must repay overpaid Bürgergeld
How to read the benefit breakdown
Most approval letters split payment into:
- Regelbedarf — standard monthly amount for food, clothing, personal needs (per person in the Bedarfsgemeinschaft / household unit)
- Kosten der Unterkunft (KdU) — rent and heating the Jobcenter considers reasonable for your area
- Mehrbedarfe — extra amounts for pregnancy, disability, single parents, etc., if applicable
- Einmalige Leistungen — one-off payments (e.g. initial furnishing, school supplies) when listed
- Gesamtbetrag — total monthly transfer to your account
- Bewilligungszeitraum — start and end date of the approval
Check that every household member is listed correctly and that KdU matches your actual rent (within local limits).
Sanktionen — benefit reductions
If you miss Jobcenter appointments, refuse reasonable work, or fail to submit required documents, the office can issue a Sanktion — a temporary cut to your Regelbedarf (typically 10%, 20%, or up to 30% depending on the case and repetition; rules are set in SGB II).
A Sanktionsbescheid must state the reason, duration, and how to challenge it. You can often avoid escalation by responding in writing immediately, providing medical certificates for illness, or rescheduling missed meetings with proof.
Nachforderung and reporting duties
You must report changes without delay (Mitwirkungspflicht / Änderungsmitteilung). Common triggers for repayment demands:
- Undeclared wages, mini-job, or self-employment income
- Someone moved in or out without notification
- Assets above the allowed limits were not disclosed
- Overlapping benefits (e.g. Wohngeld and Bürgergeld for the same period)
A Nachforderung orders repayment of overpaid amounts. Contact the Jobcenter early if you cannot pay in one sum — instalment plans are possible. Ignoring the letter risks enforcement.
Filing a Widerspruch (objection)
The Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung at the end explains your right to file a Widerspruch within one month of receiving the Bescheid (§ 70 SGB X). Send a written objection to the Jobcenter that issued the letter. State clearly that you are filing Widerspruch, cite your BG-Nummer and the Bescheid date, and explain the error (wrong income, wrong rent limit, unfair Sanktion, etc.).
Continue attending appointments and submitting documents while the Widerspruch is processed unless told otherwise — further missed duties can trigger new Sanktionen.
Bürgergeld vs other benefits
- Wohngeld — municipal housing top-up for low earners; usually not paid alongside Bürgergeld for the same months
- Arbeitslosengeld I — insurance-based unemployment benefit from your work history; if ALG I is too low, Bürgergeld may top up the difference
- Sozialhilfe / Grundsicherung im Alter — for pensioners who cannot cover needs from pension and assets
Receiving the wrong benefit type can create Nachforderungen later — report overlaps immediately to both offices.
Your cooperation duties
Bürgergeld comes with active obligations:
- Attend scheduled Jobcenter and integration appointments
- Sign and follow an Eingliederungsvereinbarung (integration agreement) when required
- Apply for jobs, accept suitable work, and document efforts
- Submit requested bank statements, rental contracts, and ID copies on time
- Report income and household changes promptly in writing
Your Krankenkasse may also ask for proof of Bürgergeld status — keep your current Bescheid copy handy.
What to do — step by step
Step 1: Note delivery date and decision type (approval, denial, Sanktion, Nachforderung).
Step 2: Check Regelbedarf, KdU, and Gesamtbetrag against your household situation.
Step 3: Verify Bewilligungszeitraum — calendar when to reapply before it ends.
Step 4: If a Sanktion or Nachforderung appears — read the stated reason carefully.
Step 5: Calendar the one-month Widerspruch deadline from the Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung.
Step 6: File Widerspruch in writing if figures or sanctions look wrong; keep cooperating with appointments.
When to get help
- Benefit was denied but you believe you qualify.
- KdU is below your actual rent and you risk falling into rent arrears.
- Sanktion imposed for a missed appointment you could not attend (illness, no childcare).
- Large Nachforderung you cannot repay — ask about instalments and hardship review.
- Letter is only in German and you need the deadlines explained clearly.
