Got a Krankenkasse Beitragsanpassung? Here's what it means and what to do.

Your health insurance just changed your contribution rate. Here's whether you have to accept it — and what your options are.

What is a Krankenkasse Beitragsanpassung?

A Beitragsanpassung is a contribution rate adjustment notice from your statutory health insurance provider (Krankenkasse). It means your monthly health insurance payment is going up — or occasionally down. In Germany, health insurance is mandatory, so this letter affects everyone on public insurance, which is the majority of residents.

This happens regularly. German Krankenkassen adjust their Zusatzbeitrag (supplementary contribution rate) every year, usually taking effect from January 1st. When they do, they are legally required to notify you in writing at least one month before the change kicks in.

Getting this letter does not mean you've done anything wrong. It's administrative — but it does trigger an important right that many people don't know they have.

What to look for in the letter

Your special cancellation right

This is the part most people miss. Whenever a Krankenkasse raises its Zusatzbeitrag, you automatically receive a Sonderkündigungsrecht — a special right to cancel your membership and switch to a different provider, even outside the normal cancellation window.

You have until the end of the month before the new rate takes effect to exercise this right. So if the new rate starts January 1st, you need to cancel by December 31st. Your new Krankenkasse will handle most of the switching paperwork — you don't need to sort it out alone.

This is genuinely worth acting on. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive Krankenkasse in Germany can be several hundred euros per year for the same basic coverage.

Should you switch?

Compare the new rate against other providers using a comparison site like krankenkassenvergleich.de or CHECK24. The statutory benefits are identical across all public Krankenkassen — the difference is purely the Zusatzbeitrag rate and optional additional services.

If your current Krankenkasse is raising its rate and others are cheaper, switching is straightforward and costs you nothing. Your new insurer handles the cancellation of your old membership once you sign up with them.

What to do next

If you're happy with the new rate — do nothing. The change takes effect automatically.

If you want to switch — act before the deadline. Sign up with a new Krankenkasse before the end of the month prior to the rate change. They'll handle the rest.

If you're privately insured (PKV) — this letter doesn't apply to you. Private insurance adjustments follow different rules.
