What is an Arbeitslosengeld-Bescheid?
An Arbeitslosengeld-Bescheid is the official decision on your claim for Arbeitslosengeld I (often called ALG I) under Book III of the Social Code (SGB III). It is paid from unemployment insurance you built up through employed work — not from general tax welfare like Bürgergeld.
The letter is binding: it states whether you qualify, your benefit rate, the approval period, and total Anspruchsdauer (maximum duration) remaining in your claim.
Agentur für Arbeit — not the Jobcenter
Arbeitslosengeld I is decided by the Agentur für Arbeit (employment agency). The Jobcenter handles Bürgergeld (ALG II). Both may contact you, but the Bescheid on ALG I comes from the Agentur.
Look for your customer number, the Bescheiddatum, and the Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung (appeal instructions) on the last pages.
Types of decision
- Bewilligungsbescheid — ALG I approved with amounts and dates
- Ablehnungsbescheid — no entitlement (e.g. insufficient insurance periods, not unemployed)
- Änderungsbescheid — amount or duration changed after new information
- Sperrzeitbescheid — benefits blocked for a period (see Sperrzeit below)
- Aufhebungsbescheid — benefits end from a stated date (e.g. new job, retirement)
How to read your ALG I Bescheid
- Arbeitslosengeld täglich — daily benefit amount (monthly ≈ daily × 30)
- Leistungsentgelt / Bemessungsentgelt — average pay used to calculate benefit (usually ~60% net for claimants without children, ~67% with children — subject to caps)
- Leistungssatz — percentage applied to your assessment base
- Bewilligungszeitraum — current approval segment (often issued in blocks)
- Anspruchsdauer — total months of ALG I you can still draw based on employment history and age
- Restanspruch — remaining entitlement left after this approval
- Sperrzeit — blocking weeks with no payment, if imposed
Annex pages show how the Agentur calculated your Entgelt from past employers. Compare with your payslips if the daily rate looks too low.
Sperrzeit — blocking period
A Sperrzeit can be imposed if you became unemployed through conduct that risks the insurance fund — for example resigning without urgent reason, dismissal for misconduct, or refusing a reasonable job offer. The Bescheid must state the length (often 12 weeks) and legal basis.
During Sperrzeit you receive no ALG I, but you may still need to register as unemployed and apply for Bürgergeld if you have no other income. An Arbeitgeberkündigung or Aufhebungsvertrag from your employer can affect whether Sperrzeit applies — read the stated reason carefully.
Who qualifies — insurance record
You generally need:
- Anwartschaftszeit — at least 12 months in insured employment in the last 30 months before unemployment
- To be arbeitslos (unemployed): no job, available for work, actively looking
- To have registered unemployment with the Agentur without delay
- No exclusion grounds (certain self-employment exits, pension age, etc.)
Shorter employment histories can still qualify if you meet alternative rules in some cases — the Ablehnungsbescheid should cite the exact paragraph if denied.
Your duties while receiving ALG I
- Attend all Agentur appointments and respond to letters on time
- Report any job offers, wages, or start of employment immediately
- Apply for suitable jobs and document efforts (you can be sanctioned for lack of cooperation)
- Inform the Agentur of illness, travel, or relocation
- Accept reasonable job placements and training offers unless legally excused
Non-cooperation can lead to benefit suspension under SGB III — separate from Sperrzeit but equally serious.
ALG I and Bürgergeld together
If your ALG I is lower than your living needs, you may receive a top-up from the Jobcenter (Aufstockung with Bürgergeld). Report ALG I amounts to both offices accurately. Receiving both full Bürgergeld and ALG I for the same period without declaration can trigger Nachforderung (repayment).
Filing a Widerspruch
You have one month from receipt of the Bescheid to file a Widerspruch (§ 70 SGB X). Send it to the Agentur für Arbeit named on the letter. State that you are objecting, give your customer number and Bescheid date, and explain the error (wrong Entgelt, incorrect Sperrzeit, miscounted Anspruchsdauer).
Keep job-search activity and appointments going during the appeal unless the Agentur tells you otherwise.
What to do — step by step
Step 1: Note delivery date and decision type (approval, denial, Sperrzeit).
Step 2: Check daily ALG I rate and Bewilligungszeitraum.
Step 3: Verify Anspruchsdauer / Restanspruch matches your employment history.
Step 4: If Sperrzeit is imposed — read grounds and calendar end date; check Bürgergeld need.
Step 5: Calendar one-month Widerspruch deadline.
Step 6: Object in writing if figures or Sperrzeit look wrong; keep cooperating with the Agentur.
When to get help
- ALG I denied despite long employment in Germany.
- Daily rate much lower than expected from your last salary.
- Sperrzeit after resignation or Aufhebungsvertrag — you dispute employer fault.
- Benefits stopped early with unclear reasons.
- You need Aufstockung but Jobcenter and Agentur give conflicting figures.
Unions, legal aid (Rechtsschutz), or employment law advisers can help with Sperrzeit disputes.
